Van Riley is the former SVP of Business Insights and Strategy for Content Distribution at NBCUniversal. He worked across NBCU’s portfolio of cable and broadcast brands to develop strategies that maximized OCF with digital and traditional distributors. He also recently served as Advisor to the Board of Shareablee, a Social Analytics startup, that doubled its subscriber base in 2015.
Prior to joining NBCUniversal he was the former Senior Vice President of Research for Home Box Office. He led the audience, consumer and competitive research across platforms. His team was responsible for all product research and analytics for HBOGO and HBO’s branded digital platforms. He was named to this position in January 2011.
Riley came to HBO in August 2007 from AOL, where he was Vice President, Research, from 2004 to 2007, responsible for all aspects of research pertaining to the Sales and Client Solutions groups. A key player in the development of AOL’s market strategies to grow advertising revenues, Riley also monitored the company’s competitiveness in new technologies and championed the launch of trade platform research programs based in the multicultural space, video research, and effectiveness of advertising.
Previously, Riley was Vice President, Corporate Research and Strategic Planning, for Discovery Communications, Inc. in Silver Springs, MD, from 2003 to 2004. There he led the development and execution of strategic research for corporate operations, business development, the consumer products group, and the international division as well as oversaw the development of market forecasts for existing and new business initiatives.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Tulane University and a Master of Business Administration from Georgetown University.
