Entrepreneur Katherine Hays felt one of her most stressful days occurred at the time she was negotiating the sale of her first company, Massive Incorporated, to Microsoft. She had many concerns: Were they selling too soon? Could they have built the company further before selling? Would the employees who were so critical to the venture be taken care of?
Finally, Microsoft said there would be no more concessions on acquisition price. Hays thought long and hard and then made her last pitch to close the deal to her satisfaction. She asked to have breakfast with Bill Gates.
Soon to be a Microsoft employee and prepared to hang up the entrepreneur title for a while, Hays went on to fulfill her dream of meeting Bill Gates. She shared this story at her alma mater, Princeton University, on March 3 as guest lecturer for the Keller Center’s Creative Minds Series in her talk, “My Journey through the Startup World from my Roots at Princeton.”
