Professor Niraj K. Jha received his B.Tech. degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 1981 and Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1985. He is a Fellow of IEEE and ACM. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT, Kharagpur, and the Princeton Graduate Mentoring Award. He is a co-founder of a startup called NeuTigers.

He has served as the Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor of several IEEE Transactions. He has co-authored five widely used books and 470 papers. He has 15 award-winning papers and 26 patents. His research interests include smart healthcare and machine learning.

What are your thoughts on Keller's Design for Innovation program?

The Design for Innovation Program enables a pathway for faculty members to convert ideas developed in their lab into wide societal impact.

What impact do you hope to have through the Design for Innovation program?

I expect the Design for Innovation program to help me form external partnerships that may lead to startups or improve the visibility of the research performed in my group.

Which feature of the Design for Innovation program do you think would be most helpful in your project?

The program already has a large network of contacts in the technology world. Introducing these contacts to the faculty members can enable the latter to dramatically reduce the time-to-impact of their research.

What advice would you have for faculty and researchers seeking to have direct, real-world impact beyond the academy?
