Design Thinking is not only a process of tackling complex problems. It is a process that keeps our desired user at the center of all we do. Quantitative methods of research can be amazing at capturing meaningful data from large segments of users, but it can lack the context and subtlety that exists in the daily lives of our users. Qualitative research is all about contextualization. It allows us to get deeply familiar with our user and the world in which they live. It is about building empathy and awareness of the complexities present in daily life. Ethnographic research is one of the best tools for qualitative research. It allows us to immerse ourselves in the lives of others, taking in details on the fringe that inform the whole. Benchmarking is looking at the competitive landscape we are looking to enter, as well as looking at tangential or unrelated areas for inspiration. During this talk we will go through real-world examples of qualitative research and see the results they led towards.
