We designed a virtual slider for online rating sites/applications. Rather than making it just as easy to give one star, three stars or five stars, our widget imposes a rising (exponential) cost to deviating from the middle (i.e. to give extreme scores). In online testing, we found that this improves the quality of the information received, making it more closely track "true" quality.
