About the Company
The Keller Center Makerspace provides access to a variety of different emerging maker technologies. Some technologies and equipment that are highlighted in the Makerspace are 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mills, and a full woodshop. All students, staff, and faculty from Princeton University can access and use the Makerspace.
The Keller Center Makerspace aims to:
- Create an open, inclusive, and welcoming space for individuals from all levels of making experience.
- Build a culture of collaboration and design to encourage Princeton students and other members of campus to make interesting things to illuminate various academic, educational, and passionate pathways.
- Collaborate with different administrative units and academic departments to develop diverse opportunities for design, collaboration, and connection.
The Keller Center Makerspace is expanding its open access hours in the Fall to engage the campus community. In staffing the Makerspace, we hope to hire graduate student staff who will champion these goals, steward in helping build a community of engaged students eager to explore their ideas and passion, and help further develop the Makerspace with the Makerspace manager.
Internship Description
The primary responsibilities of the Graduate Student Educators will be:
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and training for all visitors engaged in the Makerspace.
- Consult and advise on project ideas, best practices, and approaches that align with the goals of the project.
- Be knowledgeable of other campus makerspaces and resources, and to direct students in how to utilize those spaces as necessary.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, as the Makerspace aims to be an inclusive environment for a diverse group of users.
- Demonstrate strong situational awareness within the space to ensure the safety of all active users and the proper usage of all equipment.
- Support the manager in managing and maintaining the tools and equipment of the space.
- Supervise users in the woodshop and its tools.
- Assist the manager in supervising the undergraduate student staff
- Promote and reinforce safety protocols within the space.
- Collaborate with the manager to develop strategies on how to deploy better UX design, practices, and designs of the space.
- Efficiently communicate with the manager regarding the various happenings within the Makerspace.
The ideal Graduate Student Educator will:
- Clearly demonstrate interpersonal and organizational skills, and a high degree of professionalism.
- Possess a strong ability to work independently, think creatively, and function effectively as part of a team.
- Possess knowledge of 3D printing, CAD modeling, vector design, CNC milling, electronics, or woodworking (highly desirable, but not required).
- Demonstrate an active passion to learn, practice, ask questions and build their skills with the different tools and equipment with the manager.
- Possess and cultivate curiosity in making, design, innovation and interdisciplinary practices.
