Makerspace Manager Leigh Cole led an enthusiastic group of graduate students, undergraduates, and staff in mastering the intricate art of Kumiko, a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that forgoes nails in favor of precision joinery. Participants learned to use specialized hand tools from our wood shop to create two beautifully patterned Kumiko coasters.

The group, representing a wide range of disciplines and departments, bonded over a shared interest in Japanese culture and a desire to learn this meticulous, time-honored craft. Adding to the immersive experience, Cole treated the attendees to a delicious sushi lunch, complete with Japanese sweets, during the five-hour session.

While the work demanded focus and patience, the participants found it deeply rewarding. Many left inspired and eager to return to explore the array of exciting tools and technologies available in the Keller Center Makerspace.
