Diminishing agricultural space and the detrimental effects of climate change demand a re-evaluation of our sources of nutrition. The 10X Project aims to develop a compact hydroponic gardening system for the cultivation of spirulina, a variety of algae deemed “the food of the future” by the United Nations. Utilizing a porous, semi-permeable substrate, we aim to increase the space efficiency of spirulina growth to encourage its use in the home, promoting the benefits of consuming live algae as opposed to its widely available powdered form. Absorbing ten times more carbon dioxide and ten times less water than traditional agriculture methods, we believe spirulina has the potential to revolutionize how we view food.
